Why your restaurant is not showing in Google Maps

The ordered checks to run when you cannot find your own restaurant on the map — starting with the causes that are genuinely fixable today.

"We have disappeared from Google Maps" is one of the most common calls a restaurant makes to anyone working in local search. It is also one of the few problems where the cause is usually identifiable in under an hour, because the possibilities are finite and they can be checked in order.

The important first step is separating three different situations that feel identical to an owner: the profile is not eligible to appear at all, the profile is eligible but not competitive, or the profile is appearing perfectly well and the search you ran was never going to show it.

First, rule out a false alarm

Searching your own restaurant's name from the office, on a logged-in account, from a device that has visited your website fifty times is not a test of anything. Personalisation and physical location both shape what you see.

  • Search from outside the building, from a location a guest would realistically search from
  • Check the map result rather than the blue links — they are separate surfaces
  • Search the category query a guest would use, not your business name
  • Compare with the Business Profile's own Performance report, which counts how people actually found you

Eligibility: the causes that remove you entirely

If none of the checks above find you, work through the eligibility list. Google documents each of these, and each has a defined resolution path.

Eligibility problems and where they are resolved

Unverified profile

What it looks like
Profile exists but is not publicly shown, or shows limited information
Where to resolve it
Business Profile verification flow

Suspended profile

What it looks like
Profile disappears; management access shows a suspension notice
Where to resolve it
Reinstatement request with supporting evidence

Duplicate listings

What it looks like
Two profiles for the same restaurant, often after a rebrand or refurbishment
Where to resolve it
Report and merge duplicates

Address or service-area error

What it looks like
Restaurant plotted at the wrong pin, or set up as a service-area business
Where to resolve it
Correct the address and pin placement

Recent edits pending review

What it looks like
Changes made and visibility drops for a period
Where to resolve it
Wait out review, avoid stacking further edits

Competitiveness: you are eligible but not chosen

If the profile is healthy and still absent from the three results a guest sees, the question becomes which of relevance, distance and prominence is working against you.

  • Relevance: the primary category, attributes, menu and description may not match the query being searched
  • Distance: your restaurant may simply be further from the searcher than the venues shown, which no optimisation removes
  • Prominence: review volume and recency, and how well known the restaurant is generally, may be behind the venues appearing above you

A ten-minute self-diagnosis

When to escalate

A suspension, a stubborn duplicate or a profile that has been reinstated but never recovered its former visibility are the three situations where self-service usually stalls. They need evidence-led reinstatement or a structured rebuild of relevance and prominence rather than another round of small edits.

Common questions

How long does a Business Profile suspension take to resolve?

There is no published guaranteed timeline. Reinstatement depends on the reason and on the quality of the evidence submitted, so gather documentation before filing rather than submitting repeated requests.

We can see our restaurant but our staff cannot. Why?

Map results vary by the searcher's location and by personalisation. Different results on different devices in different places are normal, not a fault.

Will editing the profile again make it come back faster?

Usually not. Repeated edits during a review period can extend it. Make one accurate set of corrections and let the review complete.

Where does your restaurant actually appear on the map?

A visibility audit checks your local pack positions from multiple points across your catchment area — not from one phone in one place.
