Delivery apps and restaurant SEO: what actually shows up where
Delivery apps can bring demand, but they also sit between the guest and the restaurant. This guide separates visibility from ownership, shows where Google sends an order click, and gives operators a clean way to run marketplaces beside an owned ordering route.

A delivery marketplace can be useful and still be an expensive place to surrender every repeat order. The useful question is not whether Uber Eats, Deliveroo, Just Eat or an owned ordering system is universally best. It is which route a guest sees, which route they choose, what the restaurant learns from the transaction, and whether the economics still work after food, labour, packaging, refunds, promotions and platform charges.

| Surface | Its strongest job | What the restaurant controls |
|---|---|---|
| Google Business Profile | Help a nearby guest discover and act | Profile facts, eligible links and which ordering provider is preferred |
| Delivery marketplace | Aggregate demand and complete an order | Listing quality, menu, availability and promotions within the platform's rules |
| Restaurant website | Explain the brand and capture direct intent | Content, menu presentation, ordering route, measurement and first-party experience |

Those surfaces can support one another, but they do not merge into one record. A correct menu on a delivery app does not repair an old menu on the restaurant website. A polished website does not correct a closed marketplace listing. A preferred ordering link on Google changes the route presented to a guest; it does not prove that route is the most profitable one.
What Google lets a restaurant control
Google says a Business Profile can contain third-party providers and custom ordering links. Where the feature is available, an owner can choose a preferred provider separately for pickup and delivery, remove a specific provider, or hide food-ordering options. Google also says some links are supplied automatically through third-party providers, so the list deserves a real check rather than an assumption.

A valid action link must lead to a dedicated page for that business and allow the guest to complete the action. For a restaurant group, sending every location to a generic brand homepage adds friction and can fail Google's link guidance. Each branch should send the guest to the exact booking or ordering journey for that branch.

Choose the preferred link with arithmetic, not instinct
The preferred link is a commercial decision. Start with the contribution left after the full cost of each order, not headline revenue. Compare average order value, food and packaging cost, platform and payment charges, refunds, promotions funded by the restaurant, and the labour needed to fulfil the order. Platform contracts and fees vary, so use the actual statement rather than a generic percentage from an agency article.

Does a delivery app help or hurt rankings?
There is no reliable basis for claiming that using a delivery marketplace directly raises or lowers a restaurant's Google ranking. Google documents local results mainly through relevance, distance and prominence. A marketplace page may rank for its own reasons, but that is not the same as transferring ranking power to the restaurant's website or Business Profile.
Source: Google Business Profile Help — How to improve your local ranking — Google's documented relevance, distance and prominence framework; it does not list marketplace participation as a ranking factor.
The real search risk is neglect. If the delivery listing has the only readable, current menu while the restaurant website carries an image or old PDF, Google and guests have less useful owned information to work with. The remedy is not to remove the marketplace. It is to make the restaurant's own menu page accurate, readable and linked to the right action.
Google SEO and marketplace visibility are different systems
A restaurant can be prominent inside a delivery app and barely visible in Google, or the reverse. The app ranks its own catalogue for an individual customer; Google ranks local businesses and web pages for a search. Work done inside a marketplace should therefore be judged by impressions, menu views, conversion and profitable orders inside that platform — not presented as Google SEO.
Deliveroo publicly explains that its restaurant list is personalised. It also names customer ratings, preparation and delivery times, rejected orders and opening hours among the factors that affect position. Featured placements can be sponsored. That creates a practical split: accurate hours, realistic preparation times, complete orders and a strong menu improve the marketplace operation, while adverts buy additional placement.

Audit the marketplace listing, not just the link
Measure the route to the order
- List every live ordering URL: Business Profile, website header, menu page, social profiles and marketplace listings.
- Set one preferred pickup link and one preferred delivery link in the Business Profile where available.
- Add campaign parameters to links you control so analytics can distinguish Profile clicks from website navigation.
- Record orders and contribution by channel using each platform's own report; never infer completed orders from link clicks alone.
- Check for branches crossing over: every location must land on its own menu, availability and checkout.
- Review monthly. If a route sends clicks but not profitable orders, fix the journey or reconsider its priority.

Common questions
Do Uber Eats or Deliveroo improve a restaurant's Google ranking?
Google does not document marketplace participation as a local ranking factor. Keep marketplace listings accurate for customers, but work on the documented foundations: relevance, distance, prominence, a complete Business Profile and a useful website.
Can I choose which ordering link appears first on Google?
Where food ordering is available, Google lets an eligible restaurant set a preferred provider or custom link for pickup and delivery. Third-party links may also appear, and availability differs by region.
Should a restaurant send Google users to its own ordering page?
Often, but only if that route is reliable, mobile-friendly, location-specific and operationally supported. Compare the full economics and completion rate of each route before making it preferred.
Does duplicate menu content on delivery apps cause a penalty?
There is no sound reason to claim an automatic penalty. The practical problem is that an outdated or unreadable owned menu gives guests and search engines a weaker source. Keep the website menu current and useful.
How does a restaurant rank higher inside Deliveroo?
Deliveroo says its list is personalised and that ratings, preparation and delivery times, rejected orders and opening hours can influence position. Treat those as marketplace operations, measure them in Deliveroo's reporting, and keep sponsored placements separate from unpaid visibility.
Should marketplace fees decide which ordering link is preferred?
Fees matter, but they are only one line in the decision. Compare contribution after food, labour, packaging, payment or platform charges, refunds and restaurant-funded promotions, then consider delivery reach and completion rate. Use the restaurant's current contract and statements rather than a generic commission figure.
